Newt’s Emerald by Garth Nix
To be clear this was not the easiest books to get into; the first chapter does not set you up at all remotely for what follow. The first chapter, the bane of this book, is filled with such ‘frightful language’ and characters so over the top that I rolled my eyes so hard I think I saw Narnia. It’s just awful, there’s too much and the pace is off and it’s awful.
HOWEVER get past that hump of a chapter and all of a sudden you have a mysterious intrigue regarding Truthful’s (yes, that is truthfully- haha- her name) missing Emerald, a chorus of cousins crying out to seek out their cousin’s missing jewel, a rather amazing badass fez wearing Aunt, a whole heap of impropriety and a world that was actually intriguing. It definitely felt like one of those novels that had a hard time getting out the station but once it did, phew, it was amazing.
Devoured the rest of it with relish and loved it to the last. And I’m so glad I persisted after that first chapter and didn’t abandon Truthful at the start.
4/5 STARS FROM ME.
